Israel's Rebellion

Key Passage: Numbers 13:17-14:38; 20:1-3; 21:4-9

Basic Truth: God can be trusted.

Memory Verse: "The LORD our God is merciful and forgiving, even though we have rebelled against him." Daniel 9:9

Think about it: 

How can a pilot flying in a fog have any sense of peace or security?  He knows he cannot trust his own sense of direction.  He must rely entirely on the instruments in the plane’s cockpit.  Ignoring their signals can quickly lead to disaster.

                   

Even the finest of man’s inventions can on rare occasions prove faulty.  But the righteous and holy God will NEVER fail to lead us to victory when we put our trust in Him.  God will always give the best to those who will faithfully follow Him. 

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.”  (Proverbs 3:4-5)

LORD, increase our faith!

Q: How can we be sure that God will forgive? 

A: Because He promised He would!

Grade 1-2

Q: How did God show the Israelites that He can be trusted? 

A: God faithfully offered grace and mercy and showed that He could be trusted to provide whatever was needed--even when they didn't deserve it.

Grade 3-4

Q: How does God's justice make Him trustworthy? 

A: God will be fair in all that He does. He will be just in punishing sin, but He can be counted on to have mercy when we repent. 

Grade 5-6

Q: How can we be sure that god is trustworthy? 

A: The Bible is the testimony of God's faithfulness since the beginning of time. God hasn't changed. Faith in what He says give us confidence to obey Him. 

Family Activities:

1) Discuss ways we rebel or fail to trust God. 

2) Read about other Israelite rebellion in Numbers chapters 11, 12, 16 and 17.

The Tabernacle

Key Passage: Select verses from Exodus 24-40 (see lesson)

Basic Truth: God provides a way for sinners to come to Him

Memory Verse: "The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on Him in truth." Psalm 145:18

Think about it: 

God showed His presence to the Israelites in the desert by the cloud day and night, and by His miraculous provision of food and water.  Yet His holiness was made very clear by the barriers set against free entrance into the Most Holy Place in the Tabernacle.

The sacrificial death of our Lord Jesus Christ has torn away many barriers, and we are now called to enter boldly into the Father’s presence by faith.  But the greatest hindrance to fellowship with Him is still in place -- unconfessed sin in our lives.  Praise God that He has made a way to overcome this barrier, as well!  

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”  (1 John 1:9)

Q: Where do we find out how to call on God in truth? 

A: The Bible is the only source of absolute truth.

Grade 1-2

Q: How did the Tabernacle remind Israel of God?

A: The Tabernacle was God's visible presence with Israel. It reminded them of GOd's holiness and His mercy.

Grade 3-4

Q: What did God require for Israel to come to Him? 

A: God required the people to come in faith, bringing a proper sacrifice which would be offered to God by a priest.

Grade 5-6

Q: Why do we no longer need to offer sacrifices? 

A: The sacrifices of the Old Testament Tabernacle were only a shadow of the new covenant put into effect through the Messiah. Jesus became the perfect priest and the sufficient atoning sacrifice that needs no repeating. 

Family Activities:

1) Discuss how we know that God is present with us today? Marvel at how GOd can be present everywhere at the same time--all the time! Be in awe that He would choose to be present with sinners. 

2) Find out what was put inside the Ark of the Covenant. What did these things have to do with God's covenant?
